An ex- Australian politician convicted of sexually abusing two individuals he met through work has been sentenced to five years and nine months in detention.

Legal Proceedings

Gareth Ward, mid-forties, was in custody since mid-year after the court found him guilty of attacking one man and indecently assaulting another, in separate incidents in 2013 and 2015.

The defendant represented the seaside community of Kiama in the state government from 2011. He left his position as a political party cabinet member when accusations surfaced in 2021 but resisted resigning from parliament and won again in last year.

Court Ruling

The presiding officer the judicial figure evaluated Ward's disability of legal blindness in the ruling and found "no different consequence other than incarceration would be suitable".

The convicted individual, who appeared via remote connection at the courthouse, will undergo at no less than three years and nine months in prison before he can seek parole.

The court official stated the legal system needs to "send a stern message to like-minded offenders that illegal behaviors of this nature will be faced with serious punishments".

Additional Information

The judge added Ward had "escaped justice for a decade and lived freely without a treatment or penalty for his crimes during that time".

Post-trial, the politician initiated a failed appeal attempt to continue in government and left office shortly before the members could remove him.

Representatives has stated earlier he aims to appeal the ruling.

Trial Evidence

His lengthy proceedings in the judicial venue learned that he brought a drunk young adult to his residence in 2013 and sexually abused him three times, despite resistance attempts to resist.

Subsequently, he sexually assaulted a mid-twenties government employee at his home after a gathering at government offices.

Ward had claimed the 2015 rape didn't happen, and that the additional accuser was confused about their meeting from 2013.

The state's attorneys argued that notable parallels in the statements of the two men, who had no connection to the other, proved they were accurate in their accounts.

Court members considered for three days before returning the findings of guilt.

Ward's resignation caused a special election in his constituency in autumn, which was won by the opposition party.
